President/CEO, Family Health Center of Worcester
Fran Anthes’ commitment to public health and education is rooted in her belief in social justice and patient empowerment, and has spanned her entire career. Ms. Anthes joined Family Health Center of Worcester as Executive Vice President in 1991 where she was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the health center, develop health center policies, and represent the health center in the community and on the state level. She was named president and CEO in 1997 and now oversees all aspects of the non-profit health center which has a staff of more than 300, including direct financing, program development, operations and staffing, budgeting, contracting and evaluation, supervising all senior staff members, and representing the health center in local, state, and national arenas. Family Health Center offers family medicine, maternal child health, behavioral health, vision services, dentistry, nursing, a Walk In Center for urgent and primary care same-day visits, a low-cost pharmacy, lab, radiology, school-based health centers, refugee / immigrant health services, teen health clinic, ADHD clinic, INS clinic, an optical shop, HIV counseling and testing, and public health programs for the early detection and prevention of disease. In addition to its main site in downtown Worcester, Family Health Center provides care at two satellite sites in Southbridge, MA and at six school health centers in Worcester. Family Health Center administers the Women Infant Children (WIC) nutrition program at five sites in the Greater Worcester area.
Under her leadership, the staff at Family Health Center of Worcester expanded its long term commitment to medical education for family medical residents in partnership with UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Healthcare with the development of additional residency programs in oral health, an internship program for behavioral health providers, and a pioneering program for nurse practitioners.
Ms. Anthes holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of Connecticut and a Bachelor’s degree from Assumption College in Worcester, MA.
Ms. Anthes is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Community Health Centers, a member and past Chair of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, and a member of the Worcester Infant Mortality Task Force. She has served on the Central Mass Oral Health Initiative, the Board and Committees of the United Way of Central Massachusetts. Ms. Anthes received the Katherine F. Erskine Award in 1998, the Assumption Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award and the UMass Medical General Physician Outstanding Administrator in Primary Care Award in 1999. In 2009, the Worcester Business Journal recognized her with the First Annual Women in Business Award. The Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers awarded Ms. Anthes the Edward M. Kennedy Founders Award in 2014. In the spring of 2015, she received the Greater Worcester Community Foundation Renaissance Award. In 2017, Ms. Anthes was selected as a member of the Worcester Business Journal’s Hall of Fame.
